this way.

First, if you missed the introduction to Spinstercore Gardening in that previous blog post, and have no idea what it is, here’s a quick definition.

Briefly, if you combine cottagecore with grandmacore, add in a bit of the attitude of one of the most famous spinsters, Miss Jane Marple, and hire others to do the heavy lifting in your garden, you are participating in the latest gardening craze, spinstercore gardening.

Now, here are five questions commonly asked about spinstercore gardening, with answers.

Do you have to be a spinster to practice spinstercore gardening?

After some discussion, we have decided that you absolutely do not have to be single to be a spinstercore gardener. Anyone who decides it’s time to hire someone to do the heavy lifting in their garden, leaving time and energy for more genteel gardening, can become a spinstercore gardener.

Is cottagecore required?

Yes. Spinstercore gardening doesn’t work well with gardens that are overly fussy or where shrubs are pruned to precise dimensions! If you are truly a spinstercore gardener, you should want a garden that is a little blurry around the edges, filled with a mix of flowers and vegetables. In other words, a cottage style or cottagecore garden. You will also naturally tend to garden with an organic approach and consider violets in your lawn as something to be celebrated and not as a reason to reach for a toxic chemical. If you do decide to control a few dandelions, you choose an organic approach.

Is grandmacore required?

Again, yes. With that time and energy you saved by adoptiong spinstercore gardening, you’ll want to honor your grandparents and other generations by trying your hand at a few crafts, including cooking from scratch with all those delicious vegetables that you should be growing in your garden. Other suitable grandmacore crafts include reading, needlework, knitting and woodworking. Choose those that interest you the most.

Do you actually need to hire help to do the heavy lifting in your garden, or is the intent to do so enough?

Hiring someone to do those tasks that are more easily done by a strong crew is at the core of spinstercore gardening! But if this all new to you and you intend to hire someone, but haven’t gotten around to doing so, you are still most welcome to be in the Spinstercore Gardening Club. We are sure that once you hear about how transformative it can be to let someone else do the back-breaking work of the garden, you’ll soon hire someone whose cost fits within your gardening budget.

Do you need a mystery to solve to be a spinstercore gardener?

No. Even though Miss Jane Marple, our role model, was a bit of a detective who, through observation and the occasional conversation with an unsuspecting suspect, solved more than one mystery, you don’t need to be working on solving an actual mystery to practice spinstercore gardening. But you should always remain curious and ready to use the time you’ve saved by hiring out help to try a few new hobbies and activities that allow you to observe and learn.

And a sixth bonus question and answer.

If you practice spinstercore gardening, can you personally use power tools?

Of course you can use power tools, as long as those power tools are small, lightweight, and easily managed by you. This includes edgers, blowers, and smaller mowers. You should not, however, use chain saws, front-end loaders, or any equipment that requires you to put on a back pack. Nor should you do any spraying of pesticides that requires you to put on protective clothing, which you should do with any pesticide. (See above about an organic approach.) You should be able to go from the garden to the kitchen without having to put on a completely new outfit.

I hope these questions and answers have helped you better understand spinstercore gardening, and why it may be the exact gardening style you were looking for. If it is, welcome to the Spinstercore Gardening Club! We are pleased to have you as a member.

<a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" and his crew will be coming to my garden to straighten up the edging around the beds in the Vegetable Garden Cathedral, put down a proper landscape fabric in the paths (the only place I’d use landscape fabric), and then put down a good, walkable, mulch in those paths.

Then they’ll edge around all the various borders—Plopper’s Field, The Shrubbery, Autumn Dreams Gardens, Family Circle, Whatever-I-Called-That-One-Border, and Bird’s Blanket, leaving nice sharp V-cuts to define the edges.

Finally, they’ll also clean up the garden path that runs through Autumn Dreams Gardens, putting down fabric and rock to make it less of a weeding nightmare.

And with those projects done, I will be entering my spinstercore (spinster-core? Spinster Core?) era of gardening. (Let’s go with spinstercore.)

Did you know there was such a thing as spinstercore?

I didn’t. I first heard the term while watching a video on YouTube from Real Vintage Dolls House, “where nostalgia finds a home.” In the video, she mentioned spinstercore as a new term revolving around living a single life ala Miss Jane Marple of the Agatha Christie mysteries.

Miss Marple (Jane to friends her own age), a spinster, occupied her days with grandmacore type activities like knitting, cooking, enjoying tea, watching neighbors, reading, visiting shops to buy a notion of this or a packet of that, solving murder mysteries, and, of course, gardening, all minus any grandchilden.

Now combine grandmacore with cottagecore—a decorating style where vintage items, handmade items, second-hand items, and make-it-do items get mixed with fresh flowers and a sunny view of the garden—and make it the home of a single person, and you almost have spinstercore.

There’s at least one more element to add to grandmacore and cottagecore to turn a home and garden into spinstercore.

You must hire someone to do some of the heavy lifting in the garden, such as what I’m having the landscapers do next week, to free up your time for more pleasant pursuits, like grandmacore activities, and less strenuous gardening.

And that is why I am calling this era of my garden my spinstercore era.

In other words, or if you’d like an equation,

Grandmacore Gardening + Cottagecore Gardening + Hiring Someone to do the heavy lifting = Spinstercore Gardening

Oh yes, I’ll still be mowing my lawn, planting my vegetable garden, weeding, and watering. Goodness, I wouldn’t really be gardening if I didn’t do those things, now would I? I just won’t be doing those projects that I never got around to because they involve heavy lifting and wheeling around wheelbarrows full of mulch and rock. Instead, like Miss Jane Marple, I’ll let someone else do those for me, spinstercore style.

Of course, it goes without saying that I’m skipping the solving of murder mysteries, but I am open to solving other mysteries that might come my way, which may or may not involve garden fairies.

I’m leaning into spinstercore gardening!

(This post was originally published on my website.)

Subscribe now

Share

Winter Sowing

Another method...

Carol J Michel

Welcome to the season for winter sowing seeds, in which gardeners sow seeds in various containers, put them outside, and leave them be, for the most part, until little seedlings appear.

The most popular method, or at least the first method I became aware of was sowing seeds in one-gallon-sized plastic milk jugs.

To prepare the jugs, you cut them through the middle part on three sides, punch holes in the bottom, add soil and seeds, label them, tape them up, then set them outside without lids and wait.

Another method that’s becoming popular is to use gallon-size plastic bags. Same routine… holes in the bottom, add soil, sow seeds, label them, then you hang the bags up using skewers balanced between two pieces of whatever to hold them upright. There’s an Instagram account that shows this. Just search for “wintersowing.”

Then there is my set up, which I call the Versailles of Winter Sowing, the Palace of Seed Propagation, the Eighth Wonder of Seed Sowing. It was inspired by a reader of my weekly newsletter who I think sensed my procrastination with winter sowing. I had a dozen milk jugs, but twice that many varieties of seeds to sow, so I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. Plus, I was going to have to prepare each and every jug. She wrote that she used an old storage container with a clear lid and set the pots inside that, after punching holes in the bottom and top.

And just like that, I knew that’s what I was going to do. Here’s a step by step…

I rounded up some plastic pots from my garage. I usually take empty plastic pots and trays back to the greenhouse where I buy most of my plants, but I had saved some back because I thought they might come in handy someday.

I went in search of an old storage container with a clear lid. I couldn’t find one and briefly contemplated buying one just for winter sowing, but then I had the brilliant idea to turn the container upside down to make the lid the bottom. Now the lid could be any color! I immediately thought of a big storage container that was one-third full of gift-wrapping bits and bobs in the guest room. Perfect!

Next I drilled holes in the bottom, which is now the top, with a one inch hole saw drill bit. I learned quickly that the trick to not cracking the plastic is to apply steady pressure but let the drill do most of the work. Then I drilled drainage holes in the top, which is now the bottom.

Then I proceeded to sow my seeds in the four-inch round pots, add labels, printed with my Epsom label printer, and set them in the Taj Mahal of Winter Sowing.

I rounded up a few miscellaneous bricks, which I used to make sure the bottom was heavy enough not to be bothered by wind or animals, and then I added a few bricks to the top for the same reason.

<a Yes, you can, but I often lose track of them when I sow them that way. By sowing in containers, I’ll get some seedlings, hopefully, that I can plant where I want them to be. (I did sow some poppy seeds by scattering them around.)

Do the containers need to be covered? No, they don’t, but covering them keeps out the animals that might like to sample the seedlings. It also protects them from heavy rains that might wash away the seeds. Yes, I realize that a one-inch hole is big enough for a mouse to get in if they could climb the slippery side up to the top. I’ll be checking the seedlings often enough that I hope I’d catch such a critter before they did too much damage.

Is it okay for those seeds to be out there in the cold? I thought seeds needed warmth to germinate? Seeds have all kinds of conditions for germinating. I only sowed seeds that I knew would be fine in the winter weather. They should all germinate in their own good time.

Why not just sow the seeds indoors? I could have sown many of these seeds in containers and put them under lights but that requires far more tending than winter sowing. For the most part, I can forget about these seeds outside. I’ll check on them periodically and if they look dry, I may give them a little water, but that’s about it until I have seedlings!

What do the garden fairies think about the Palace of Seed Sowing? Well, I hope they are impressed, but one never knows. They are garden fairies. Perhaps they’ll write their own post about it?

Thanks for reading to the end. Most to Them, edited by Roxanne J. Coady & Joy Johannessen.

Of course, my thoughts turned to gardening, and gardening books in particular. Which gardening books have changed my gardening life?

Then I decided, in the spirit of the book I had just purchased, to ask some of my garden writing friends which gardening book changed their gardening life.

I received several responses, which we’ll get to in a few paragraphs, but first, a few comments, some instructions, and a warning!

Yes, this post comes with a warning that after reading it, you may find yourself trying to find good, used copies of several old gardening books. (I’ll offer you some tips on how to do that at the end.) You might also find yourself meeting several new-to-you garden writing friends of mine. Many have written some excellent books themselves. You may want their books too.

You can thank me later!

I was also going to write “or you could curse me later by wishing an invasion of Asian jumping worms upon my garden.” But I can’t think of a single reader of mine who would be so cruel. You are all the kindest and best. In this season of Thanksgiving, I thank you all for being supportive and kind.

So in that spirit, like a child offering her mom the first violet of the season, I offer you this post, a list of garden writing friends telling us about gardening books that changed their gardening lives.

It’s a bit longer than most posts, so if you are reading this on email, you might need to click over to read it on the web. You might also want to settle into a comfortable chair and grab a hot tea or other beverage of your choice. Maybe get a cookie or two for sustenance halfway through. Oh, and grab some paper and a pen to take notes.

All set? Here we go!

Books That Changed Our Gardening Lives

Ellen Zachos, Author of Mythic Plants: Potions & Poisons from the Gardens of the Gods, said that Making Things Grow by Thalassa Cruso (1969) changed her gardening life. “Thalassa gave me the courage to experiment because she openly talked about her own failures, and if someone like her could fail, then surely I was also allowed (and even expected) to! Plus, she had a great sense of humor.”

Peggy Riccio, horticulturist and owner of pegplant.com, an online resource for gardeners in the Washington, DC metro area, listed The Pleasure of Herbs by Phyllis Shaudys ( 1986). Peggy wrote, “I love the month-by-month structure where each month focuses on a particular herb and covers a variety of ways in which herbs can be used. For example, February features herb lore for lovers, March describes starting herbs from seed, April explains potpourri, May has sweet pillows, and June has tussie mussies. There are beautiful illustrations and loads of herbal information and recipes. The book made me realize how useful herbs can be both in the garden and in the home, plus the month-by-month structure motivates me to try these herbal projects and recipes each month.”

Lois J. de Vries, Executive Director of the Sustainable Gardening Institute and Library, shared two books that changed her gardening life. First was The Woodland Garden by Robert Gilmore (1996). Lois wrote, “At the time I bought it, there were no other books available about gardening in a mature woodland, and Gilmore’s garden setting was very like my own. His naturalistic style and how-tos for creating a sense of enclosure and building a garden around the landscape’s existing features (boulders, ledges, fallen logs) deeply resonated with my own aesthetic and sense of values.” A close second was John Brookes’ The Country Garden ( 1987). “This book introduced me to the concept of borrowed views and how to frame them so that they visually “expand” the size of my garden. This allowed me to incorporate views of the lake across the road as part of my garden (the obverse of Gilmore’s book). It has many excellent examples of garden elements, types of gardens (including a woodland one), and suggested plants to go with each. I turn to both of these books again and again for the timeless landscape principles and examples they contain.”

Teresa Speight, author of Black Flora: Inspiring Profiles of Floriculture’s New Vanguard, wrote back quickly and told me the book that changed her gardening life was Gardening Life by Lee May (1998). Teri wrote, “It was meaningful to see someone who looks like me who could eloquently share his thoughts on the garden. In a garden that to him was perfectly timed right, abundantly planted, Lee May shared his garden experiences, which brought him joy.”

Kathy Purdy, known for blogging and writing about gardening in a cold climate, wrote, “A Year at North Hill: Four Seasons in a Vermont Garden by Wayne Winterrowd and Joe Eck (1995) showed me that a cold climate was no impediment to a beautiful, sophisticated garden. The month-by-month format helped me develop a maintenance routine as a young gardener. I still like to read this book every year. “

C. L. Fornari, radio host and the author of the upcoming book, Hydrangea Happiness: Planting, Pruning, and Blooming, wrote, “The book that changed my gardening life was Mrs. Greenthumbs: How I Turned a Boring Yard into a Glorious Garden and How You Can, Too, by Cassandra Danz. I read it in 1993, and I loved how funny and often irreverent it was. Cassandra combined no-holds-barred advice with out-and-out passion for plants.”

Natalie Carmoli, Public Relations Specialist for Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Shrubs and popular garden speaker, shared with me that Complete Guide to No-Dig Gardening by Charlie Nardozzi (2020) changed her gardening life. She wrote, “About 5 years ago I moved to a new property with one acre of almost pure sand soil. I needed a way to build new flowerbeds that fed my shrubs and perennials as their roots grew deeper into the soil. Plus, I had a LOT of yard waste to deal with. This book made building new, raised garden beds so easy, and as the mounds break down, I know my plants are benefiting from all the organic material that I already had! I even share the info I learned from it (with credit) in some of my talks!”

Dee Nash, author of The 20-30 Something Garden Guide: A No-Fuss, Down and Dirty, Gardening 101 for Anyone Who Wants to Grow Stuff, and garden coach, who many of you know is also my podcast co-host, told me that the garden book that changed her gardening life was Theme Gardens by Barbara Damrosh (1982). Dee wrote, “It made me dream of what could be. It taught me about butterflies.”

As for me, one of the books that changed my gardening life was Gardens in Winter by Elizabeth Lawrence (1973). Elizabeth, whom I quote on every Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day post, introduced me to the concept of perpetual spring, the idea of selecting plants for your garden so there is always something new coming into bloom, even in the wintertime. She is the reason I grow autumn crocuses, Christmas roses, witchhazels, and other winter-blooming and winter-adjacent-blooming plants.

Notice I wrote “one of the books.” That’s because I own and have read so many gardening and gardening-adjacent books—too many some might say, but I don’t listen to those people— that I could write a rather long post about how each one changed my gardening life in both subtle and profound ways. I’m sure the same is true for all the garden writers who responded to my request to share their garden life-changing book. They probably all immediately thought of several different books.

But there is only so much time…

And now it’s your turn. What gardening book changed your gardening life?

A couple of closing notes and thoughts

I hope you found some new gardening books to put on your to-be-read pile!

You will notice that I only linked to the websites or linktrees of my garden writing friends, to point you to where you can find more information about them.. That’s because I want you to visit them and check out what they have to offer. Several have written excellent books themselves and will have links on their sites where you can find their books for sale.

As always, I encourage you to shop for new books at a local independent bookstore. If they don’t have a book in stock, they are happy to order it for you. If you don’t have a bookstore nearby, you can also shop online at bookshop.org, a site that supports independent bookstores.

For older books no longer in print, I think the best place to find them is on bookfinder.org. It will serve up a list, in price order, of almost anyone, anywhere, who has that used book you want for sale. It searches eBay, AbeBooks, Amazon, etc. Do be careful, though, and check descriptions and publishing years, especially if you want the book as originally published, and not a print-on-demand copy of an old book. Also look on Amazon for eBooks, if you prefer those. Often, old gardening books are converted to eBooks and are free or as cheap as 99 cents.

Okay, that’s enough book-buying advice. I hope you find your next life-changing garden book from the list above!

Happy Reading!

P. S. Secret Diary of a Garden Fairy, pictured above, sadly doesn’t exist. But if you should find some garden fairy writings, let me know.

Originally posted on my blog.
<p a first frost and what they tell us about you as a gardener.

Do you panic?

When frost beckons for the first time in the fall, some gardeners panic. They run around grabbing sheets off their beds and shower curtains out of the bathrooms to drape over flowers, the vegetable garden, and anything else they think might be saved from the chilling temperatures. They are begging for more time. Another week or two? These same gardeners can often also be found shopping for gifts on Christmas Eve. Their denial of the end of the gardening season may require professional help!

Do you party?

On the complete opposite side of the garden from those who panic, are those gardeners for whom the arrival of frost means they can drop their hoe without remorse and start their off-season party. They head straight inside to forget about the garden until sometime in the spring, when they are sure there won’t be any late frosts. Their rallying call is, “No more gardening to be done until spring!” Let the off-season partying begin. They are part of the “pack it in crowd,” who, quite frankly, are missing out on one of the best seasons for planting and gardening. These people are generally not really gardeners.

Do you plan?

Our planners are ready for that first frost, and have no doubt made a list of all the gardening they plan to do once the frost arrives. For them, that first frost is like a starter’s pistol going off. Now they can start planting the bulbs for spring flowers they ordered earlier in the summer. They can head straight to the garden center while there is still frost on the pumpkin to once again start buying trees and shrubs for fall planting, often at reduced prices. They start digging new planting beds for spring. They are ready with a plan! They’ve planned for this season in the garden for months!

Do you pretend?

Some gardeners like to pretend the first fall frost didn’t happen. They try to ignore it and continue going along as though that first frost won’t be followed by a second frost, a third frost, and eventually, a hard freeze. They want to pretend there is still time, that the growing season isn’t ending. They’ll claim the first frost was not really all that bad, so there’s still time for summer gardening. They may still have some annuals or other summer season plants that they haven’t quite gotten around to planting out. They probably have some seeds they had hoped to sow. They are a lot like those who panic, but they won’t ever show it. They want to appear like a duck gliding smoothly across a pond, hiding its furious paddling beneath the surface.

Do you pause and ponder?

Our final group of gardeners like to pause and ponder once the frost arrives. They expected the frost and may even welcome the frost. They take it in stride as they clean up the vegetable garden. When raking leaves, they pause to reflect on the gardening season. Was it good? Bad? What will they do different next year? They may have a small to-do list, but they are in no great hurry like those who plan. They simply enjoy fall and take the change of season in stride as they rake, mow, maybe do a bit of garden clean up, with plenty of pauses to take in the beauty of the season.

What do you do when that first frost is predicted? Is that how you’d like to respond? If not, adjust accordingly, while there is still time.

Note: I have not yet had a frost on my garden this season and don’t see one happening for quite a while, if the weather forecast is correct. I took that picture in 2007.
<p class="button-wrapper" is.

"...Gardening simply corrodes the character."

If you have a bit more time, allow me to give this line some context.

I recently read Henrietta’s War: News from the Home Front 1939-1942 by Joyce Dennys (1985). It's a series of fictional letters written during World War II for a magazine, The Sketch, which were later published in two books. Henrietta's War and Henrietta Sees it Through: More News from the Homefront: 1942-1945. (Both are out of print, but you can find used copies for not astronomical prices on Bookfinder.)

In Henrietta's War, one of Henrietta's letters describes visiting an open garden and noting how otherwise upstanding citizens were seen stuffing seeds and cutting into their handbags and pockets. That was a bad thing to do back then, and is still a bad thing to do today.

But, the "greatest line ever written about gardening" wasn't exactly about the stealing, bad as that was. It was about a perfectly nice woman making a catty comment about the garden.

And I quote.

"'It’s like a seedsman’s catalogue!’ said Lady B, with a contemptuous snort.

Charles and I looked at each other with our eyes wide open. To have a garden like a seedman’s catalogue has always been our wildest ambition. Besides, it was the first catty thing we had ever heard Lady B say, which just shows how far from being an ennobling pursuit, gardening simply corrodes the character.”

That last phrase has stayed in my mind for day. Days, I tell you.

"Gardening simply corrodes the character."

I want to stitch it on a pillow, or put it on a little sign to stick in my garden.

"Gardening simply corrodes the character."

Or maybe I'll just make a little graphic to share.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

In so many ways, it does! until some future date the planting of newly purchased or acquired plants.

Verb: Plantcrastinate. She plantcrastinated on planting out her new plants because she <s>was lazy</s> didn't know where to plant them.

Noun: Plantcrastinator. Someone who plantcrastinates.

Here are some signs that you or someone you know might be a plantcrastinator.

You are a plantcrastinator if you don't plant out or pot up new plant purchases within a few days of bringing them home to your garden. (Yes, I am granting everyone a few days grace from purchasing to planting before they become a plantcrastinator. After all plants aren't like ice cream left in a grocery bag on the kitchen counter. They won't melt if you don't plant them right away.)

You are a plantcrastinator if you have so many plants in their original containers that you begin to arrange them on your patio as though you've already potted them up. Note, if you are delaying planting for whatever lame reason you've come up with, grouping plants by their watering and light needs is a pretty good idea to make it simplier to care for them pre-planting. Not that I want to encourage plantcrastination, but if you know you are one, be a good one.

You are a plantcrastinator if you get more thrills out of finding or buying plants than you do in actually seeing them grow and thrive in the ground in your garden where they are supposed to be. So you keep buying more plants and then leave your purchased plants on your patio or front walk or wherever. If this describes you, then you probably also have at least one article of clothing that you bought last season still hanging in your closet with the tags on it.

You are a plantcrastinator if you've ever tried to overwinter a purchased plant in its original container because somehow that felt like it might be easier than actually planting the plant in the ground before winter. That's a fool's game to play!

You are a plantcrastinator if you pot up plants that should be planted in the ground because you aren't sure where to plant them. They can continue to grow in their new, bigger container while you continue to plantcrastinate. This is a highly sophisticated form of plantcrastination, and is similar to rearranging dishes on your kitchen counter because you haven't decided where those dishes should really be stored, or the cabinets are so full, there's no place to put new dishes.

You are a plantcrastinator of the worst kind if you ever had a plant die on you while still in its original pot, waiting, hoping, crying out to be planted in the garden. For shame. If this is you, seek help, or at least don't buy another plant until all the plants you've already purchased are in the ground.

There are, of course, some rare cases when plantcrastination is acceptable. For example, if you are moving and taking plants with you, you may dig them up, pot them up, and take them with you to your new garden, which may not be ready for new plants. In that case, carefully tending these plants in pots is acceptable. Or if you buy a new plant while on vacation, of course, you can't plant it in your garden until you get home.

Or maybe you bought a plant on impulse—one that was rare or you thought you'd never find again for sale—and aren't sure where to put it in the garden. Plantcrastinating for just a bit until you figure out where to put this special plant, which might require moving other plants first, is acceptable, but do be careful. If you plantcrastinate for too long, that rare plant might be a dead rare plant.

If you believer you might be a plantcrastinator, where can you go for help? It's easier to tell you where you should not go for help, and that is anyplace that sells plants. That means garden centers, greenhouses, seasonal departments, etc. Depending on how bad your plantcrastination is, you may need to just stay home, grab a shovel or trowel, and start planting. Then, once every single plant is out of its original pot and planted out in the garden, you may resume purchasing plants.

But please don't become a watercrastinator. Don't postpone watering hoping for rain, or just assume those newly planted plants are fine way out there in the garden. They will need to be watered regularly and you need to do it!

How do I know so much about plantcrastinating? Is it from my own experience? I'll never tell, but right now, every plant I've purchased is in the ground or in the pot I potted it in. (Smug smile and haughty sniff.) That's all you need to know!

Next week, we'll talk about weedcrastinators.

This was originally posted on my blog on August 26, 2025.

Subscribe now

Share
